Autumn Report

It seems such a short time since I reported on the preparations for the 2019 season. Now the summer has gone, the daylight hours are shorter and our evening league fixtures complete by the end of August. Our afternoon fixtures continued into September leading up to the closing of the green at the end of September.

As usual our season has seen its ups and downs. There were two real highlights. The first was when our Tuesday night pairs team playing in the Airedale Wharfedale league won the first division team cup competition beating Greenbottom from Guiseley in the final. Then, to cap it all, they did the double and were crowned division one champions in a closely fought contest ahead of Idle and Burley-in-Wharfedale. The second highlight was when our Skipton league team, which plays on Thursday nights, won the second division title ahead of Colne Legion, thereby gaining promotion to the top flight next season. This means we require two extra players for the team next season as division one teams are ten players, whilst division two and lower are only eight players.

The green was in generally good shape throughout the season running very smoothly, but still with a few patches requiring attention as a result of last year’s drought conditions. Our member volunteers have cut the green throughout the season and it is fair to say it has been in much better shape than when the council were doing the job. We have set up an arrangement with a greenkeeper who provides advice and will carry out work as part of our winter maintenance programme. Following the Council’s stated intention to stop looking after bowling greens in 2020 the club is now independent. Inevitably our costs have increased as a result, but we were given no choice in the matter if we wanted to continue with bowling at Oxenhope.

As mentioned in the Spring edition, as part of our fundraising, we have promoted a Mystery Walking Tour around Oxenhope with some very positive feedback. It is well worth trying and good value at £3 for the eight page booklet.

We were pleased to welcome a number of new members to the club this year all of whom have made good progress and have been playing regularly in our starter leagues on Tuesday and Friday nights. Most have also attended our regular Monday morning sessions for a general get together and some social bowling set amidst the very pleasant garden areas created by our President, Peter Hudman. We are looking forward to them progressing further next season and moving up to other leagues as their game continues to improve. Recently we arranged for a bowls coach to attend and provide help and advice to our newer bowlers. This was well received and we hope to organise a repeat session at the start of next season.

We are hoping to recruit more new members and recently held a Fun Day when a number of non-bowlers joined us for a not too serious afternoon of trying out bowls for the first time. They were each paired with one of our members to help them get started and compete for the Bay Horse Doubles Trophy. Perhaps the experience will give one or more of them the incentive to consider taking up bowls which is a good competitive sport for all age groups and ideal when it comes time to hang up your boots or you struggle to run the extra mile.

Our AGM will be held in the Bay Horse on Monday 4 November 2019

Looking towards winter, bowling does not stop. We have teams in the indoor league at Victoria Hall and in three outdoor leagues at Saltaire, Halifax and Hove Edge. It is a bit different to summer bowling and not something in which all of our members participate. Many prefer to put their bowls in the attic until the better weather returns in Spring. It is, however, surprising how mild some of the winter days can be and so the more hardy choose to continue.

Anyone interested in playing bowls or needing further information please call Mary Hemsley on 07544 454829 or Lorraine Douglas on 07703 126205 or Peter Hudman on 07946 780670 or email imwia@tiscali.co.uk. Mary is one of our experienced team captains, Lorraine is the Club Safeguarding Officer and Peter is the Club President. The club web site can be found at www.oxenhopebowlingclub.co.uk.

Spring 2019 Report

The winter months have passed quickly and the new bowling season is almost upon us. It is worth mentioning that club members have remained active over the winter period with the club being represented in several winter league teams playing on the greens at Halifax, Hove Edge and Saltaire. Club members also played in the short mat indoor league at Victoria Hall in Keighley. Winter teams comprise of just four persons playing against teams from a wide geographic area across Yorkshire. The winter season normally finishes during March prior to the start of the summer season.

The best performance of the winter was by the team entered in the Halifax Bowling Club Winter League. Playing against strong opposition they finished as runners up in division one. The teams in the other leagues did quite well, holding their own in their respective leagues and finishing in mid table positions.

This year the club will be promoting a “Mystery Walking Tour” around Oxenhope to raise funds for the purpose of maintaining the bowling green. This is a short walk around the village commencing at the railway station, solving twenty or so interesting and challenging clues along the way. It is suitable for all age groups and fun for all the family. Reasonably priced at just £3 it represents good value for three hours or more of entertainment and should be available in April. Anyone requiring an early copy please advise the contacts listed in the last paragraph or order by email.

You might ask why the club needs to raise funds. In view of cuts in funding by the Council the club is now responsible for the maintenance costs of the bowling green. Volunteers now undertake the three times weekly cutting of the green. The Council continue to have a limited involvement with other types of maintenance but, under present council policy, this will be withdrawn in 2020. Thereafter club members will be responsible for all aspects of maintenance. Members do of course contribute significantly to costs, but this explains why raising extra funds to contribute to the withdrawal of Council services is important.

Looking ahead to the new summer season starting in April the club will continue as a member of several leagues – Worth Valley, Airedale & Wharfedale, Hebden Royd, Halifax and Skipton. Ten teams have been entered in these leagues with fixtures on afternoons or evenings most days. There will be plenty of bowling in Oxenhope Park this spring and summer. Members of the public are very welcome to look in on games anytime. Refreshments are available in the pavilion on all match daysIt is very pleasing to see that there has been quite a lot of interest from new players recently. As mentioned in the Christmas edition of Oxenhope Outreach a new team will play in the Airedale & Wharfedale Doubles League on Tuesday evenings in the new season, which is particularly suited to new players. In addition a team of relatively new players will participate in the Hebden Royd Friday evening league. These entry level teams give new players every chance to progress to higher levels if they wish to do so. For anyone wanting to start playing bowls now is the best time to get involved at the start of the season.

There will be an open morning on Monday mornings commencing in April at the bowling green in Oxenhope Park. Anyone wishing to call in is welcome, either to have a coffee and a general look around or maybe to have a try at bowls. The club operates a Safeguarding policy approved by the British Crown Green Bowling Association.

CFFC Funding Awarded

Picture1

Following the report given to members at Oxenhope Bowling Club’s last Annual General Meeting members will be pleased to learn that funding was awarded to the club by CFFC (Community Foundation for Calderdale) for the purpose of buying a new mower. The club was eligible to apply for an award due to its close proximity to Ovenden Wind Farm. CFFC is the body which deals with applications and allocation of funds on behalf of Ovenden Wind Farm.

Until recently the local council dealt with all aspects of green maintenance including cutting the green. However this service was provided at a cost which has increased year on year and is expected to continue to do so up to 2020. After that it is likely the service will be discontinued due to the council ceasing to receive grants from central government.

Bradford Council

To date the council has been cutting the green twice a week during the season, but that is due to change shortly due to the withdrawal of council services following the reduced level of funding they now receive from central government. So we will be keeping a close eye on the state of the green and developments concerning the council.
